Randy Lucas established Lucas Custom Instruments in 1988. Self-taught, Randy’s background in mechanical
engineering and music influenced his approach to repairing, restoring, and building
guitars during the formative years of his career. He focused much of his attention
studying the design and sound of the prewar Martin and Gibson flattops. He soon
built a national reputation for creating superb guitars based on those models.
More recently Randy has introduced two new models. The Small Jumbo (See photo)
and Large Jumbo. Both models feature his newly designed “J” neck.
Two beautiful book matched pieces of figured wood (Hard Maple or Mahogany) are
joined around a thin dark wooden center strip that match a rear peghead veneer
as seen on many fine archtop guitars. The uniquely shaped peghead with script
style Logo make the new “J” neck and body shapes a stunning
combination. More importantly, Randy offers the serious player more than a
beautiful guitar. Every player’s point of body contact with the guitar
is ergonomically shaped to enhance the playing experience. Randy feels that
the guitar should not only sound great and look great, but feel comfortable
to play well.

HIGH GRADE RED SPRUCE TONEWOOD SUPPLY
I began cutting Red Spruce in 1994. As a guitar builder, it was my way to have
more control of the sound of my guitars. To me, half or more of the sound of
an instrument is inherently found in the material itself. The importance of
wood selection, cutting, and drying soundboards, coupled with my experience
as a guitar builder, bring a unique combination of skills not commonly found
in the market place.
I'm offering all grades (including Master grade) of Red Spruce tops in D and
OM sizes along with brace wood as 1x2x22 size sticks. Please contact me for
pricing and availability.
